Wilson Reading Instructor

Julie Lang

One-on-one tutoring with a high-quality, trained reading instructor makes a world of difference for a child.

Upon my arrival in the Roaring Fork Valley 25 years ago I started a family and found myself busy teaching art classes, art camps, ski school and horse back riding. In 2016 I became aware my youngest child is dyslexic. It was a gut instinct because I myself am dyslexic, and, after having my son tested I found my instincts to be true. Knowing first hand what it is like to struggle with reading, I understand how humiliating it can be to the poor reader in the class. This promoted me to explore my son’s options. I do not want my child or any child to suffer the low self esteem being a struggling reader can promote.

I joined the International Dyslexia Foundation and become Certified in the Wilson Reading Program. The program is stylized and designed not only to teach dyslexic children but to teach all children who struggle with reading no matter the learning difference. After teaching this program to children over the past four years I have experienced what a difference individualized reading tutoring can make in a child’s reading performance and self esteem.

One-on-one tutoring with a high-quality, trained reading instructor makes a world of difference for a child. Unfortunately this type of specialized instruction can be expensive and financially prohibitive for many families; therefor I founded The Rock Star Readers to provide tutoring on a sliding scale. The mission of Rock Star Readers is to help children become better reader and enjoy their own genius. At present, you can find me teaching in the Reading and Riding summer camps at WindWalkers.

Abby grew up in the valley and graduated from Aspen High School in 2019. Her interest in horses has always been there. She started by working with an Outfitting company in Snowmass where she helped do lessons and give trail rides. After 4 summers, Abby found herself up at WindWalkers as a junior volunteer, helping to feed, muck and aid clients by leading and side walking. She also loves to volunteer for camps and be with all the kids as they learned to love being around horses themselves. After a couple years, she found her passion in working with horses and with kids and adults both who have challenges. She often says, “it’s their smiles that make my heart light up.” She first began to work with WindWalkers in 2019 after graduating. This past Fall, Abby started her college career at Colorado State University studying Equine Sciences to continue to grow her knowledge for everything horses! Fall 2020 she plans on beginning to do Equine Therapy classes as well as Equine training classes to help learn more about behavior in both areas of the Equine Industry.
